Fields of Green

In 2003 I learned of a new elementary school about to be built honoring Dorothea Lange, one of my favorite photographers. The school is located in Nipomo, California, where Dorothea made her famous photograph, Migrant Mother; which became an icon for the Great Depression. The location of the photograph is now a gas station, however, the surrounding land is still agriculture.

California's agricultural industry is a major part of the state's economy. Over one-third of the United State’s vegetables and three-quarters of fruits and nuts are grown in California.

I began this project with the construction of the Dorothea Lange Elementary School and then continued to photograph the surrounding area to show children where our food comes from and the importance of taking care of our earth.
